How to use sections and blocks and what’s the difference?

Sections and blocks may seem like identical entities at first glance. However, each of them is responsible for different parts of the email. They do share some of the style options, but they are different components of your email. Let’s take a look at them in detail.

What is a section?

A section is an email element that adds styles to the entire email and changes its structure. To see all styling options available for sections, click Section and view the Styles tab. Styling options include: 

  • Background color - Set a background color for your section.
  • Background images - Add a background image to a section
  • Content color - Use auto to apply the content color from your template styles, manual to select a different background color or none for a transparent background
  • Border - Set a solid, dashed, or dotted border surrounding your section 
  • Padding - Add space between your content blocks and the edge of a section area 
  • Position- Choose whether columns should stack on mobile and whether column content is aligned to the top, center, or bottom of the section 

What is a block?

Within sections, blocks are created to populate your email with content. Most blocks have a Styles tab, where you can set the proper appearance of the block. The specific style settings available are different for each block type.

What’s their main difference?

A section is responsible for setting the structure of your entire email, while a block is responsible for populating the content in your email.

In other words, a section is the structure of your email, while a block fills this structure with various content.

How to use a section?

1. First, navigate to the Content section by clicking it in the upper bar of your dashboard.

2. Locate the blue button labeled Create new, click on it, and choose Email. Otherwise, if you have already created your email, you can select it from the Content section and click Edit on it.

3. You will default see with a standard email template you can edit and manage. To add a section, click on the Sections tab in the right panel on your dashboard screen. 

4. To create a new Section at any other place, just drag and drop any type of section from the panel to the right.

5. As we mentioned, every section has its style options (once clicked on it), as shown below.

6. To delete a section, click on it and the Trash Can icon to the right.

How to use a block?

1. First, navigate to the Content section by clicking it in the upper bar of your dashboard.

2. Locate the blue button labeled Create new, click on it, and choose an Email. Otherwise, if you have already created your email, you can select it from the Content section and click Edit on it.

3. By default, you will see at least ten blocks.

4. To use a Block, simply drag and drop it inside any section.

5. Once inside the section, you can use multiple options available for each block.

6. To delete a block, simply click on it and click on the Trash Can icon.
